I am currently studying for the GMAT and I am having a hard time finding time to study due to being the sole income earner in the family. My wife and I have a young baby as well. What GMAT score would I need to get into:

INSEAD, IE (I can get a recommendation from an MBA Alum of IE), IMD, or NYU?

Age: 30
Nationality: American
Ethnicity: Asian and Hispanic

Academics
- 3.2 GPA; 3.5 Major GPA
- Triple degree in the Humanities and Social Sciences from U.C. Santa Barbara. Finished in 4 1/3 years.
- Worked full time to pay for college
- First person in my family to go to, and graduate from, college.

University Extracurriculars

- Captain of the Taekwondo team, served as a political liaison for an ethnic student body, was a member of a hip hop dance team.
- Also taught women's self defense, children's martial arts classes, as well as being ranked #2 in the U.S. in judo in my class.

Work Experience (America)

- Nearly 2 years as a manager for a large, well-known psychiatric facility in America.

Work Experience (Japan)

- Editorial and narration work for the largest media outlet in Japan(NHK).
- Worked in sales for a famous language education company in Japan (The second largest in the industry).
- Statistically the top sales performer during my time.
- Became a sales manager (one of the few foreigners in charge of Japanese nationals)
- Currently a sales trainer.

Others

- Conversational, near business-level Japanese speaking ability; knowledgeable in Spanish

Well, if you are determined to go, maybe you should apply no matter what GMAT score you got?!
But let's say, returning with a 670 at least would be good, higher better :)

Thank you!

I assume that the 670 covers all of the programs I mentioned? Including NYU?

When aiming for top schools you should be looking at score above 700.Juggling between work and studies is tough so you need to define a significant time for your GMAT preparation. Sometimes taking few days off work for preparing for the GMAT can help a person tremendously. If you have time this may not be a bad idea. Take practice GMAT tests to see how you are doing. If you cannot do that don't worry. What might work instead is to set aside 1-2 hours at night on weekdays and major part of your weekend to study and prepare for GMAT- in this case we will suggest a good 2-3 months preparation. However we recommend you to keep taking practice tests to gauge your performance. It will help you in identifying your weak areas and you can focus on them accordingly. You might be able to study more than the given hours and that would take you less than 2-3 months. It all depends on your potential really.
There are various ways you can use to practise for your GMAT. You might need to change your practise style and try this combination to provide you flexibility and different styles to practise so it doesn't get monotonous.
It could be combination of-
1-Books- Books like- The Official Guide for GMAT Review, The Official Guide for GMAT Verbal Review, The Official Guide for GMAT Quantitative Review etc could be used.
2-Online Study Guide: Websites like Knewton, Grockit etc provide you with practise questions online.
3-Smart phone applications- Kaplan, Veritas etc offer applications to prepare for GMAT on your smart phones

Your profile seems strong- make sure you highlight your global work experience in best light. In brief overall the quality of your work (what you did there like-what were your achievements, what initiative you took, what changes you drove in your workplace etc), your academics and beyond academics will play an important role in determining your candidature.

nosetothegrindstone, there's actually a LOT of interesting elements in that profile you posted. Yes, you need to get a good GMAT score (the breakdown of quant/verbal needs to be balanced), and HIGHER than a 670 is going to be pretty darn important if you're serious about schools like NYU or any other top US schools. The European schools are also competitive though not nearly so crazy on the GMAT score as the US schools. INSEAD, IMD, and IE actually have surprisingly low GMAT scores, given the quality of the education and the experience you would have there (part of the reason is that they look for older candidates, who typically have lower GMAT scores, at least in part due to reasons you cite such as family obligations etc.). The 670 number is lower than what we typically recommend as a target or "safe" level though there are many other factors that go into play; plenty of people with lower scores and strong profiles otherwise still end up with offers from top schools, but it becomes a riskier proposition obviously.

The main reason for this post is not to make you worry unnecessarily about the GMAT, but more to emphasize that you've got a lot to offer to the schools based on what you posted, and you should definitely go for it!! It'll come down to strong essays, as it always does, however you seem to have plenty you can pull on to make for a compelling argument to the adcoms.

Hope this helps, let us know if you have other questions we can tackle!

The best GMAT score is what will get you in your BSchool.

I want to tell you a thing. Dont think about anything else but your preparation. Dont keep a score in mind, for now at least.

First basics, then accuracy and finally speed.

Appear for not more than two tests in the last fortnight.

Best fo luck.Keep posting.
