B, C and E are wrong because the pronoun reference "They" is unclear....
Leaves us with A and D
D is wrong because it is wordy and awkward....
Answer A

Can anyone give a better explanation...why D is wrong?

in D "so that" sound like "cause and effect" which is not the case.
The powers of two are bloody impolite!!
