by mba2008 » Fri Jun 15, 2007 6:55 pm
Hi Stacy - I am hoping to apply to a top 10 business school for Fall 2008 and would like to hear your recommendations on how to make my application stronger. After my MBA, I woud like to pursue a career in the non-profit sector

Education:
Undergrad: Finance
GPA: 3.7
GMAT: 650 with plans to retake the test (Q47, V 32)

Work Experience:
Employed by IT Company: responsibilities include managing budget and forecast cycles, providing business analysis for executive stakeholders, building financial models for new business initiatives

Internships: 3 summer internships at IT company (Finance & Marketing positions) and continued the last internship through senior year

Volunteer Activities:
Mentor at risk youth: 2 years
Active volunteer with organizations such as Junior Achievement, Starlight Starbright, and Ronald McDonald House

Any suggestions you have will be appreciated. Thanks...

I think your work experience could be the weakest point in your application. As you describe it, there is little evidence of leadership. It also does not clearly link to your future goals. Career switching is fine, but you may want to think about how your experience to date plays into what you want to do in the future and how you can leverage those skills.
