Calovia products

by ssgmatter » Sun May 09, 2010 9:04 am
Many residents of Calovia are committed to using products containing recycled
materials. Soon these consumers will get help in identifying such products from a book
being published by the Calovian government. The book offers a comprehensive listing,
by product type and brand, of goods sold in Calovia that contain recycled material.
Therefore, publication of the book will almost certainly increase the use of products
containing recycled materials in Calovia.
Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?
A. Proceeds from the sale of the book are not expected to exceed the cost of its
publication.
B. For numerous types of products, there are many brands that use recycled
materials, although their manufacturers and distributors do nothing to advertisethose brands' recycled content.
C. For many materials, such as plastics, the recycling process results in a lower
grade of material with a correspondingly different range of uses.
D. For many types of products listed in the book, all the brands available in Calovia
use recycled materials.
E. Many manufacturers of products that contain recycled materials vary the
proportion of recycled materials in those products in response to changes in
price and availability.

My understanding of the question:

Conclusion:Therefore, publication of the book will almost certainly increase the use of products containing recycled materials in Calovia.

Prephrasing of the question in my words:

Residents of calovia commited to use recycle prod...so govt plan to publish book that would contain all the info about the products by type and brand of goods sold in calovia that contain recycled material.....so this publication increase the use of prodcuts contain recylce material

My take on the choices here:

A--> out of scope talks about the proceeds from the publication no bearing on the conclusion and the argument as such
B-->many manuf produce such recycle material but do not care to advertise the same then this idea of publishing a consolidated book by the govt would highlight the products and people who are already commited to use such products would increase their usage because of the knowledge of such products
C-->I was confused on this one but i believe this is the wrong one becuase who cares if plastics have multiple uses we need to know that how to increase the use of plastics so this should be out....
D-->no effect on the conclusion that says the increase use of the prodcuts
E-->same as D

Please confirm my understanding of all the options especially for B and C....
Best-
Amit

The assumption in this argument is that when you know which products contain recycled materials, you're more likely to use them. The only way this could be relavent is if there are products that use recycled materials yet consumers do not know about them. The answer is B, it stregnthens this assumption.

C is out of scope because it addresses the assumption that when a product has the possibility to be used for more tasks, then consumers will indeed use it for more tasks. This passage doesn't say anything about the use of products. It only talks about consumption.

You're good on the others.

Can you confirm the OA is B?

I think argument does not talk about the consumption....It clearly talks about the use of the products...I am just trying to understand the wrong and right options here

Still not clear on C though.....However I understand B makes a more valid sense here.....Any thoughts??

In order to strengthen the argument we need to prove the publication of book will increase the usage of products.

Option B clearly states that since people are not aware of certain products, this book will make them aware of these products and usage of the products will increase.

Option C supports only the recycling process but not the book publication. Its does not provides any additional support to the argument.
