Why not C?
Why would it be C? C is missing 'that' after revelealed in the answer choice, so for that very reason I would eliminate C, D and E.
Being defeated is often only a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent.

IMO A:

C is also grammatically correct but

problems with C : meaning is different from given A

A says : ...its was a <mystic> guided ..... [ the emphasis is on guide, mystic is just an adjective for guide ]

C says : it was a mystic and guide .... [ the emphasis is on both, mystic and guide. mystic is a noun here ]

revealed.....THAT <-- is the right form in this sentence.

(C) says revealed....this.... <--- changes the meaning. its saying as if the diary revealed something now....and then in these sentence are followed by a past tense (was, to have been). therefore C is definitely wrong!
