Option E is wrong for the following reason. It states that the drawings in the 1910 Wasmuth edition show his works to have been in the vast spaces of an imaginary Wild West. Thus, the drawings show the works TO HAVE BEEN in those spaces. This means that in the present (Present Simple: SHOW) the drawings indicate that in the past (Perfect Infinitive: TO HAVE BEEN) the works of Wright actually stood in the Wild West. This idea directly contradicts what the sentence affirms earlier on, that none of Wright's houses was ever built on the prairie - in other words, in the Wild West.

If certain things SHOW something TO HAVE BEEN in a particular place, the idea is that those things were in that place at some unspecified past moment. Thus, the sentence would be saying that at some time Wright's houses actually stood in the Wild West. This is directly contradictory of what the sentence says in its first clause.
