"One of the" pattern construction

by Edwin1982 » Wed Apr 08, 2009 5:11 pm
Hi,

Quick question about the "One of the" + plural noun + that/who + Plural Verb.

The updated flash cards note that this construction should end with a "singular verb", other resources list that it should end with a "plural verb"

Which is correct?

Thanks.

I believe it should be singular. However, I'll wait for the SC gurus of the forum to answer.

I am just curious as to what your other sources are.

IT HAS TO BE SINGULAR

try making a sentence with plural

I hope you will understand thereafter.

Thanks for replying.

An older version of the flash cards had this pattern ending with a plural verb, and the attachment for Sahil's grammar notes too.

To confirm:

CORRECT: He is one of the persons who makes money.

INCORRECT: He is one of the persons who make money.

CORRECT: He is one of the persons who makes money.
This is correct
INCORRECT: He is one of the persons who make money.

Another way to check if this is correct or not

remove the phrase between the subject and the object,I mean remove the bold part

Now

he who make money

does Subject- Verb Agreement holds :D

I think now it is crystal clear that which one is correct
