While the base salary for the top five officers of the company did not change from 1990 to 1991, cuts were made in nonsalary compensation, as in allowances for overseas assignments and club memberships.

(A) cuts were made in nonsalary compensation, as in

(B) cuts were made in such nonsalary compensation as

(C) cuts were made in such nonsalary compensation as those in

(D) cuts in nonsaIary compensation were made in areas like

(E) there were cuts made in nonsalary compensation, in areas like

Answer c

For starters, next time can you please underline the portion of the text under consideration? This will help everyone. Thanks

For the question at hand. To be honest, I am not sure why C is correct. I went with B. Can anyone else help here? But, I can help explain why E is incorrect. E uses like. Like on the GMAT is used for comparison. (Flash card: like = "similar to"). Such as refers to specific examples. In speech we often uses this incorrectly and so the GMAT loves to trick us.

Thanks! I can explain why it is not B for you. B changes the meaning by the way it is written. In B the sentence is implying that the word 'allowances' is the description of how the cuts were being executed (B answers the question 'How were cuts being made? cuts were made AS allowances according to b'), when what the sentence is trying to convey is that it is making cuts TO the allowances (What areas of nonsalary compensation are they cutting? allowances for ...).

I still think that B should be the correct option.

Intended meaning of the sentence -

During 1990-91, for top five executive there were no cuts made in base salary but in other components such as their allowances for overseas assignments and club memberships

The correct idiom is such x as y and z. Hence the OA C

OK, so everyone is down to B and C. I would chose B.

In C, "cuts were made in such nonsalary compensation as those in " , those refers to cuts and then these cuts are shown to be examples of nonsalary compensation. I think Non slalary compensation are such as allowances in X and Y not cuts in allowances etc.
