Artistic Persons

by treker » Sun Mar 28, 2010 7:43 pm
Artistic persons contract viruses and infections more often than do non-artistic persons. However, artistic persons have a significant advantage over non-artistic persons, when performing tasks that are dominated by use of the right hemisphere of the brain, and writing fiction for most people is a task dominated by use of the right hemisphere of the brain.

The information above, if true, best supports which of the following hypotheses?

(A) There are proportionally more people who are more susceptible to viruses and infections than people who are artistic or accomplished fiction writers.
(B) If an artistic person contracts viruses often that person is likely to be an accomplished fiction writer.
(C) Most artistic writers of fiction contract some form of virus.
(D) The right hemisphere of the brain controls artistic functions and thought.
(E) Fiction writers are more likely to have artistic talent than are non-fiction writers.

IMO B

(A) There are proportionally more people who are more susceptible to viruses and infections than people who are artistic or accomplished fiction writers. this is out of scope passage does not talk about number of people -eliminate
(B) If an artistic person contracts viruses often that person is likely to be an accomplished fiction writer.
correct answer correctly both the pieces of evidence
(C) Most artistic writers of fiction contract some form of virus.
kind extreme -eliminate
(D) The right hemisphere of the brain controls artistic functions and thought.
too narrow -eliminate
(E) Fiction writers are more likely to have artistic talent than are non-fiction writers.

IMO D

(A) There are proportionally more people who are more susceptible to viruses and infections than people who are artistic or accomplished fiction writers. We dont know about number of people who are artistic. So comparison cannot be made. Eliminated
(B) If an artistic person contracts viruses often that person is likely to be an accomplished fiction writer. This is reverse of what is mentioned in the psg. A fiction writer is likely to contract virus but reverse is not true.
(C) Most artistic writers of fiction contract some form of virus. cannot be inferred. eliminated
(D) The right hemisphere of the brain controls artistic functions and thought. correct
(E) Fiction writers are more likely to have artistic talent than are non-fiction writers. we dont know anything about non-fiction writers. Eliminated

I go with D by POE.

(A) There are proportionally more people who are more susceptible to viruses and infections than people who are artistic or accomplished fiction writers.

--The argument has no information that can help in deriving a comparison between the number of people who are susceptible to virus and the number of people who are artistic.

(B) If an artistic person contracts viruses often that person is likely to be an accomplished fiction writer.
--Wrong causation. Virus has nothing to do with becoming a fiction writer.

(C) Most artistic writers of fiction contract some form of virus.
--Makes sense, but sounds a bit extreme. Too much of a statement. Dont be artistics you might catch a virus :)

(D) The right hemisphere of the brain controls artistic functions and thought.
Hold it. I am not comfortable with this choice. If someone can explain that would be great.

(E) Fiction writers are more likely to have artistic talent than are non-fiction writers.
--Easy one. Non fiction is out of scope.

I think this one you expect, when you are crossing 730. IMO the answer should be C, but not sure. What is the source and OA?

IMO E for sure.

You can confirm it using the Denial Test:

"Fiction writers are LESS likely to have artistic talent than are non-fiction writers" = Non-fiction writers have more artistic talent than fiction writers. Argument falls apart!

I think it should be C as the passage talks about Artistic vs Non-Artistic and that Artistic persons have advantage over Non-Artistics when it comes to the use of Right Hemisphere of the brain. So C supports that answer. What is the OA???

My take is D as
" right hemisphere of the brain controls artistic functions and thought" is only notion that can be derived from that sentences.
There are some doubts for others where as some are not mentioned.
