Migraine

by pareekbharat86 » Wed Dec 04, 2013 8:10 am
Migraine, the most debilitating common form of headache, afflicts perhaps 18 million Americans, who collectively lose 64 million workdays a year, and they cost the nation $50 billion in medical expenses and lost work time.
(A) year, and they cost the nation $50 billion in medical expenses and lost
(B) year and thus cost the nation $50 billion in medical expenses and lost
(C) year, so as to cost the nation $50 billion in medical expenses and lost
(D) year that costs the nation $50 billion in lost medical expenses and
(E) year, which thus cost the nation $50 billion in lost medical expenses and

OA is B.

Americans cost the nation 50 billion? Or is it the migraine that costs the nation?
Thanks,
Bharat.

Migraine, the most debilitating common form of headache, afflicts perhaps 18 million Americans, who collectively lose 64 million workdays a year, and they cost the nation $50 billion in medical expenses and lost work time.
In the above sentence,a cause affect relationship is shown i.e because of migraine--- Americans are affected and hence costing the nation $50 billion in medical expenses ......, So based upon this (c) is wrong because its depicting that something intensionally is being done.
(A) year, and they cost the nation $50 billion in medical expenses and lost
"They" here is reffering to Americans which shouldn't be the case.
(B) year and thus cost the nation $50 billion in medical expenses and lost
Correcr option because "thus" is stating the affect and is going to migraine.
(C) year, so as to cost the nation $50 billion in medical expenses and lost
So as to...states something is happening intensionally
(D) year that costs the nation $50 billion in lost medical expenses and
That here is going through year, which is not costing the nation....meaning is altered here
(E) year, which thus cost the nation $50 billion in lost medical expenses and
Which is again going to year, hence meaning is altered.

Hi Anjali,

How are A & B different in their meaning?

A attributes the case to the Americans, but so does B since it uses the verb 'cost' (for a plural noun- Americans). I think had the verb been 'costs', the case would have been rightly attributed to the condition i.e. migraine and not Americans.

I would appreciate if an instructor intervened and cleared the doubt.
Thanks,
Bharat.
