bonds and stocks

Many investors base their choice between bonds and stocks on comparing bond yields to the dividends available on common stocks..

A. between bonds and stocks on comparing bond yields to
B. among bonds and stocks on comparisons of bond yields to
C. between bonds and stocks on comparisons of bond yields with
D. among bonds and stocks on comparing bond yields and
E. between bonds and stocks on comparing bond yields with

IMO A

compare to vs compare with = compare to - compares dissimilar things
between vs among = between - choosing between 2 things

Sentence compares like things so we need compare with.

If you're comparing two things, the correct word is "between." "Among" would be used for comparisons of 3 or more things. And the noun form of "compare" is correct to follow "base...on", not the gerund. The correct answer here is C.

BUT WHY GERUND FORM IS NOT CORRECT IN E

AND NOUN FORM CORRECT IN C?

GERUND ALSO ACT AS NOUNS

"between" used for 2 things so B and D out.

"on" is a preposition and hence comparing (present participle) is incorrect, comparisons is more appropriate here.

I CAN SAY: He keeps ON MAKING trouble.

So, why not "on comparing" in choice answer "E" ??????????????

GMAT is designed to kill :) I solve things I have no idea about just by seeing the same error more often. I try do study academically as much as possible but doesn't work half the time with these questions.
