Hello,

Can you please assist with this:

Will at most 80 percent of the students at a
certain high-school apply for college?

(1) Of the students at the high-school, 76
percent of the male and 80 percent of the
female will apply for college?
(2) There are 980 students at the highschool.

OA: A

Thanks a lot - Sri

Target question: Will at most 80 percent of the students at a certain high-school apply for college?

Statement 1: Of the students at the high-school, 76 percent of the male and 80 percent of the female will apply for college?
This becomes a weighted average question.

The important point here is that, if take a male population with a 76% college application rate and combine it with a female population with a 80% college application rate, the RESULTING GROUP will be such that 76% < (college application rate) < 80%

So, we can see that it is definitely the case that at most 80 percent of the students will apply for college.
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: There are 980 students at the highschool
This has no information about college application rates.
There are several values of x and y that satisfy this condition. Here are two:
So statement 2 is NOT SUFFICIENT

Answer = A
