Sentence correction

Sentence correction

The proliferation of computer games designed to involve many players at once were first developed before the widespread availability of high-speed Internet connections.

Please help me how to correct this sentence.

The subject "proliferation of computer games" follows the pattern X of Y. Therefore, the verb following the subject should be singular.
