In the rectangular coordinate system shown above, does line k (not shown) intersect quadrant II?

(quadrants placed as follows: II I
III IV)

1) the slope of k is -1/6

2) the y-intercept of k is -6

This is QID 1293 in the GMATFix Solutions Engine

Statement 1
Remember that lines extend infinitely, so a line with a negative slope will always enter quadrant II (because the line goes up and to the left forever). Such a line, by the way, will always enter quadrant IV (goes down and to the right forever).

(1) is Sufficient

Statement 2
the y-intercept doesn't tell us whether the line will enter quadrant II. A horizontal (flat) line would never reach the top half of the system (quadrants I & II) while a downward sloping line (negative slope) would always reach quadrant II.

(2) is Insufficient

The answer is A
