Algebra Problem Solving Resources?

by mdavis » Mon Dec 22, 2008 9:37 am
Hey all,

So as I continue my studying of these GMAT questions, I find that I am having a really hard time setting up algebraic questions in a problem solving situation. My problem is that I freeze up when I see the question and just can't seem to figure out how to put it in algebraic terms.

When I go to the answer explanation, it makes sense how they explain it, but I have a hard time doing it on my own.

Has anyone found a good resource that will help out with this or some suggestions as to how I can improve on this weakness of mine?

Thanks!

Set Theory

Hi GMAT_TI,

Link was really good. It something related to number sys as well which is tested freq on GMAT. Well I have written GMAT once and I find following topics diff and one reason is enough questions and material to learn is not available.

Set Theory n Veen Dig: There were 3 ques and two were DS

Statistics: I am aware of concepts Mean, Median, Mode and SD and Normal Distribution graph but believe GMAT test you very thoroughly on these,

Sequence and Series:

Number System:

If members or instructors would like to share resources and question in particular it will be of great help. I Know there are loads of question in posts but its diff to dig back and check.

Thanks in Advance

CrackGmac,
More than any book I have found this forum (user posts and other user reponses) very useful in strengthening the basics around the topics u have mentioned above or oher topics in general

Manhattan GMAT number properties book is good also. I would suggest that u use the search function on this forum and type in the following keywords:

1) sets
2) venn diagram
3) number properties
4) inequalities
5) absolute (sbsolute value problems)
6) remainder
7) sequence
8) standard deviation ,mean, median,mode

You can searhc for any topic that comes to your mind relating to GMAT qaunt (not by any means limited to topics mentioned above)You will come across so many different problems relating to the topics above. If u go through the problems on this forum it would be helpful in tackling what the GMAT can throw at u. The concepts tested are the same but the way a question is worded makes the difference. By getting exposed to various problem types and terminologies its just a matter of time before u turn a weakness in to a strength. Also search for posts by Stuart Kovinsky, Ian Stewart,Ron Purewal in the quant forum. IMO no book can provide the information that they have shared(worth its weight in gold really) on this forum w.r.t to the various topics. If u can understand their thought process for approaching any problem then along with practice u r well set for a good quant score

Let us know if u still have questions. Good luck!

Regards,
Cramya

If u want to find posts form a certain user then all u have to do is click on the user name from one of their posts and then from the user's homepage u can browse all their posts.

Not sure how u r searching. If u type in the key words I mentioned above in the search box on top of this page u will be taken to numerous questions which u can right click and open in an new browser window. This way u dont have to keep searching each and every time to open a new question.

Hope this helps!

Looking for post by user name helped, but is there any way in which a topic i.e a particular ques is marked as distinct or important.

I dont think any question is marked important on this forum(takeaways are there from all of them)

Searching the topics that you are interested in would be the way to go in addition to searching by user posts.

Do look at Stuart's, Ian's and Ron's posts(in addition to others) for sure. You will learn a ton...
