Hi everyone,

I've decided I don't want to attend a program I've been accepted to. Aside from sending in the response form saying I've decided not to attend, is it also a good idea to call the people on the adcom I've been in touch with and let them know?

Also, on the response form, there is an option to defer enrollment to the following year. I don't expect to enroll in this program in even the following year, but if I ever lost my job unexpectedly it would be nice to have the option open. Is there any reason why I shouldn't do this instead of just decline the offer? How does the deferal process work? I know they have to be approved by the adcom.

Thanks in advance

Even though schools offer a deferment option, many will require an explanation of why you are requesting it. If you a deferring merely to have an option if work does not go as planned, you probably will not be granted deferment. If you are granted deferment and choose not to attend next year then the chances of going to that program at a later date will be pretty slim.

Deferrals can be tough. You really need a good reason for why you're deferring. But with the number of applicants this year, schools may actually like the idea of you deferring, so that they can then accept another highly qualified applicant next year...
