MBA References requirement - Question

by Vadim » Thu Apr 16, 2009 8:42 pm
Hi Stacy,
I was wondering of how outdated the references should be if I'm applying for mba. One I will get from my employer, but another will likely from a professor - I'm currently entering my last year and inclining to ask for references now rather than after I'm done, because things change: some professors go on vacation, etc.

Is it ok if say, I've graduated in 2010, applying for mba in 2012-2014, but my references from professors are dating back to 2009-2010? Seems logical to me since once I graduate professors remember me better than when I come back..but would like a confirmation.

Thanks,
Vadim.

Dear Vadim,

Most schools expect references to be written within the few months prior to submitting your application. Schools usually have their own form for the recommender to complete, which is sent electronically. So while you can get letters now, they will not be of much use to you after about 6-12 months in terms of business school applications.

Good luck,
Lisa
