iMO, option A is refuting the possibility of reverse relationship between Smoking and likelihood of Depression. Argument states that Smoking likely causes depression.
This argument will become weak if any option states that there is in fact opposite relationship, i.e., depression causes smoking. Option A suggests that both the depressed and non-depressed participants had the same likelihood to take up smoking.
