Part-time MBA, GMAT Question

by CaptainJ » Sun Jan 09, 2011 8:28 am
I am fairly happy with my performance on the GMAT and was hoping the community would help me decide if it is in my best interest to take the test again.

Note that I plan on applying to a part-time program, which states that their class profile has an 80% GMAT range of 620-730. When I apply I will have 3 years of experience, a 3.4 GPA (early graduate, same school but different department) and some volunteer and extracurricular activities.

Is it worth the time and effort for me to study again and retake the test if I don't think I can score higher than a 740 (if that) or should I focus on other things that may enhance my application (taking advanced math courses at a local college, more volunteer work, learning the piano, etc.)?

Any advice is very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

While it is always nice to score above the 80% range, there is certainly no need. 90% of the accepted students do not score above the range. It is not clear from your post whether you actually have scored a 740, but if you have, particularly for a part time program, you should take the score and run.

Most people with a score over 700 lower their scores when they retake. Also, you need 40 points for statistical significance. The chances of scoring 780 are dim and the result is unnecessary.

Scores are only one element of the application. The top schools regularly turn down people with750-800 GMAT scores. You have shown the academic ability necessary for an MBA. You now need to focus on communicating the things that will make you a strong class contributor and a successful manager.

Good luck,

Thanks for the response!

My mistake, I meant to put that I have scored a 700 (90th %). Guess it just slipped my mind.

Thank you for your intelligent and detailed response nonetheless!

My advice still stands. You are well within the range of scores for those individuals accepted to your target program. You would be much better served to go for killer essays and a sparkling application.

Good luck,
