A vending machine dispenses gumballs in a regularly repeating cycle of ten different colors. If a quarter buys 3 gumballs, what is the minimum amount of money that must be spent before three gumballs of the same color are dispensed ?

a. $1
b. $1.75
c $2
d. $2.25
e. $2.5

Pls explain why the answer choice, as given in Kaplan Workbook, is b

To guarantee 3 gumballs of the same colour, we need 21 gumballs (since that will give us 2 cycles of 10 + 1 triple colour).

It's 3 gumballs for every 25 cents, so 21/3 means we need to make 7 purchases.

7 * 25 cents = $1.75
