CR from MGMAT

The number of new cases of tuberculosis diagnosed in Country X increased dramatically this year. The country's news media have speculated that the sharp increase in new cases is the result of the tuberculosis outbreak that occurred in neighboring Country Y last year. Health officials in Country X have therefore proposed that all visitors from Country Y must submit to a medical examination before entering Country X.

Which of the following, if true, most strongly suggests that the proposed medical examinations will NOT help curb the spread of tuberculosis in Country X?

A)Country Z, which also neighbors Country Y, has not experienced an increase in cases of tuberculosis.

B)Current medical technology is not capable of detecting all carriers of tuberculosis.

C)Country X does not have the resources to examine all visitors from Country Y.

D)Tuberculosis is not spread through human contact.

E)Citizens of Country Y will not travel to Country X if the proposal is implemented.

The OA is D. Can some one please guide me?

you know B and D are the strong contenders...

B) medical technologies cannot detect all the carriers -- if human contact is one of the contacts then it screening can help curb...so does not effect

D) you can guess -- if human contact is not one of the sources of spread...the screening does not necessarily help!

Therefore D

Someone else posted this question a couple of ago, and I chose B. And was I wrong!!!

Yes, it is D. I was tricked by "all carriers of tuberculosis" which I thought would mean " all types of tuberculosis". Thinking further, even if it were "all types of tuberculosis", the choice would be D. There is an outbreak and the country is quick to examine visitor assuming that Tuberculosis spreads through human contact.

Just to add one more thing to the comments above:

It will happen occasionally in CR that more than one answer gives you something that you're looking for. They will still be clear in the instructions, though:

Choice B definitely weakens the plan, but choice D destroys it.

Choice B definitely weakens the plan, but choice D destroys it.
The correct answer to Weakening question maybe a choice which weakens or destroys the conclusion. If B is weakening, both B and D are correct

please, explain me why B is wrong.

This is basic question and worth studying.

Hey Jim,

If I assume that the spread of Tuberculosis is through air and not human contact, option D fails. Any points on this?

Thanks!
