Olympic Games

by Domnu » Mon May 24, 2010 10:14 am
The Olympic Games helped to keep peace among the
pugnacious states of the Greek world in that a sacred
truce was proclaimed during the festival's month
.

(A) world in that a sacred truce was proclaimed
during the festival's month
(B) world, proclaiming a sacred truce during the
festival's month
(C) world when they proclaimed a sacred truce for
the festival month
(D) world, for a sacred truce was proclaimed during
the month of the festival
(E) world by proclamation of a sacred truce that
was for the month of the festival

Eliminate B for there is no subject for the hanging word 'proclaiming'
Eliminate C for ambiguous 'they'
Eliminate E for wrong usage: "....proclamation of a sacred truce that was for"

IMO D as it is clear

IMO D.

POE works best here..

E--> Wordy and Weird
C--> "they" is ambiguous.....it could point to either games or states
B--> Games are not proclaiming and "the festival's months" is not preferred to "month of the festival".
A "in that" is acceptable here as it explains the actions in the previous clause. But "the festival's months" is not preferred to "month of the festival"............and "for" could be used as a substitute of "in that" and "because".

Thanks very much, everybody, the OA was D. I initially put A as the answer, but now understand why this isn't correct.

Regards,

D
