Hard Time: Please evaluate my profile

by xitij » Mon Oct 13, 2014 10:15 am
Hi,

I need some direction and guidance in assessing my profile. Following is a gist of my profile:

Nationality: Indian
Work Exp : 5 years
Industry: IT/Telecom
GMAT: 590 (utterly disappointed)
10th/12th : 82% / 76%
Undergrad Qualification: B.Tech from National Institute of Technology with 76% (don't know how to convert in GPA)
-> Supervised 10-12 member team.
-> no international exposure but lot of interaction to other cuture (Finnish/China)
-> Some leadership opportunities in college and in job
-> Good number of hobbies
-> Planning to open NGO

I want genuine advice on how my profile looks and is there any hope that i can go forward with this score as i don't want to take another shot to GMAT. Can I get some decent colleges in USA, Canada or Germany. Please give a look to my profile. Awaiting response

Hi,

The work experience you gained, your achievements, leadership qualities matters more than your GMAT so don't get disappointed with GMAT score. You can still apply to decent schools and get through if you really focus and work hard on your applications. Since you have decent GPA from reputed Indian university it will compensate your low GMAT upto certain extent but still you can try retaking GMAT and target to improve your score for minimum 650 for better chance. Dear Xitij,

A slightly different take on this. In the absence of details about your work related (or otherwise) achievements, it is difficult to make a good overall recommendation. But in general, coming from a super competitive pool of applicants, to stake a claim at a good school, you should ideally be targeting a score in the vicinity of 700.

Read here for a bit more perspective on this.

Hope this nudges you in the right direction.

Cheers,

I am sorry, but you need to improve your GMAT score or as another option take the GRE. But a 590 from an Indian IT candidate is not competitive at most schools. On the plus side, I have known many people who have improved their GMAT score from the 500's into the 700's.

Good luck,
