Let's take each statement one by one.

(1) (a)(c) = 0

=> At least one between a and c is 0.

If a = 0, we see that c can be positive or negative. Thus, we cannot determine whether a < c. Insufficient.

(2) a + b = 0

Since a < b, a and b cannot be 0. Thus, a is negative and b is positive. However, since we do not have any information about c, we cannot conclude whether a < c. Insufficient.

(1) and (2) together

From (2), we know that a is negative; thus from (1), we must have c = 0. Thus, a < c. Sufficient.

The correct answer: C
