John traveled the entire 60 miles trip. If he did the first 12 miles of at a constant rate 24 miles per hour and the remaining trip of at a constant rate 48 miles per hour, what is the his average speed, in miles per hour?

A. 20mph
B. 24mph
C. 30mph
D. 32mph
E. 40mph

Hi Max

So John traveled 12 miles at a constant rate of 24 - or for 1/2 hour. Hereafter he traveled the last (60-12 miles) 48 miles at a constant rate of 48 miles pr. hour - or for 1 hour.

we use the formula: distance = time*speed => speed = distance/time, in which we can insert the above; speed = 60 miles / 11/2 hour
and get the answer E
