She PLAYED with her friends when the babysitter ARRIVED

Manhattan exp says :In the above sentence played takes place after the babysitter arrived.
Doubt: I feel both the actions express same level of importance , thus how come one is happening before the other ?

It is because of the use of WHEN,which is a time indicator. Restructuring would help you to understand


when the babysitter ARRIVED,She PLAYED with her friends .... As the babysitter arrived, action happened

I believe was playing will be better usage showing the she was already playing with her sister,when the babysitter arrived.

in the time line played and ..arrived how do they fit in,that's the question to be asked.
