In Hungary, as in much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women work, many of which are in middle management and light industry.

A. as in much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women work, many of which are in
B. as with much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women works, many in
C. as in much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women work, many of them in
D. like much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women works, and many are
E. like much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women work, many are in

I thought I got it right. The OA challenged my understanding of like vs as.

C

Though not sure why there is no conjuction between an overwhelming proportion of women work AND many of them in

I thought E is correct. But the OA is C

H & EE are nouns. why do we have to use as?

Why is like wrong here? can some one explain?

Is the "In" before H the culprit?

Hungary like EE is a different construct when compared with the construct

In Hungary, like EE

As u have rightly said it is 'in ' the culprit ...and more over the second part of the sentence .. best fit wud be ' many of them are in '

C is correct because it's parallel. None of the other choices have parallel comparison.

here r few important points we need to remember while solving this question:
according to manhuttan sc -
1)like should be used to compare any nouns.
2)as should be used in a comparison involving clauses.
3)pronoun which introduces phrases that modify things.

in the question above, Hungary is not compared with eastern europe. rather it is the state of the women, who work, in these places is compared.
hence we cannot use "like" here. hence eliminate D n E.

in A, which cannot be used to introduce a phrase to modify women (women r not things). hence A is incorrect.

B - with n in - parallelisn issue.hence incorrect.

hence IMO C.

Thanks!

Reconstructing the choice will help.
In Hungary, an overwhelming proportion of women work, many of which are in middle management and light industry as in much of Eastern Europe
Cheers!
