If production on line A increased 5% from 2006 to 2007, and if production on line B increased 10% in the same period, how many units did line A produce in 2006?

(1) The two lines combined produced 100,000 units in 2006.
(2) The two lines combined produced 107,500 units total in 2007.

The OA is C.

Please, can anyone assist me with this DS question? I need help to solve it. Thanks in advance!

Say line A produced x units in 2006, thus, it produced x + 5% of x = 1.05x units in 2007.
Similarly, say, line B produced y units in 2006, thus, it produced y + 10% of y = 1.1y units in 2007.

We have to find out the value of x.

Let's take each statement one by one.

(1) The two lines combined produced 100,000 units in 2006.

=> x + y = 100,000. Can't get x. Insufficient.

(2) The two lines combined produced 107,500 units total in 2007.

=> 1.05x + 1.1y = 107,500. Can't get x. Insufficient.

(1) and (2) together

From the two linear equations: x + y = 100,000 and 1.05x + 1.1y = 107,500, we can get the unique value of x. Sufficient.

You must note that the equations are not quadratic and if they are linear, they are not the same equation.

The correct answer: C
