HI all,

My name is eshwar. I am, taking the test in the month of march 2012 and i am encountering huge fluctuations in the scores among various test taken.. Request to go through the score report of 2 of the latest tests taken and kindly answer the queries:

KNEWTON FREE GMAT TEST

(15 -Jan - 12)

TYPE SCORE RIGHT / WRONG ESTIMATED PERCENTILE RANK
Quantitative 26 16/21 17%
Verbal 29 29/12 53%
Total 470 26%

MANHATTAN FREE GMAT TEST

(01-Jan-12)

TYPE SCORE RIGHT / WRONG ESTIMATED PERCENTILE RANK

Quantitative 39 19/18 57%
Verbal 29 21/20 56%
Total 560 57%

A) In KNEWTON VERBAL section i have 29 correct out of 41 and only 2 questions are wrong in the first 10 questions and still the CAT shows 29 as verbal score where as 21 were correct in manhattan test and the score remains the same as 29!!! . i am pretty sure that knewton verbal test questions were quite hard but unable to understand how the score remains the same.

B) In Manhattan maths i have 19 correct out of 37 and the score was 39, where as 16 correct in KNEWTON test made the score as 26 ? !!!

C) Over all i feel in the test taken from knewton my score should have improved or remained ore reduced by 30 points when compared to that of manahattan's by taking into account the increased number of correct questions in verbal. However quants stil need to be ramped up.

Request to assist in the above queries and give additional inputs and let me know if you can suggest in me purchasing 5 tests of manahattan. i have read in various forums l that manhattan tests are more standard than others.

report card is as below

Are you just taking a lot of tests or also analyzing your mistakes and working on your weak areas ?

hi,
thanks a lot for the reply.

A) yes to a very great extent i have been solving the problems without learning from the mistakes.
B) in the beginning i concentrated on maths and verbal went for a toss.
C) later i started doing more of verbal and i am now in a little bit better position .
D) Now again maths has been jeoparadised.

i am extensively using GROCKIT.COM for preparation and it seems to be a good website. have solved around 800 questions in english and 500 in maths. I still need to ramp up the quants part.

i am able to solve the problems of 300 - 500 range . beyond that tension sweeps in and unable to proceed. unable to guess correctly also.

please suggest a real good book which covers extensively all the topics that you have used to practice and has the 500 - 800 level questions.

Also i have OG, MGMAT 8 guides. princeton verbal and math workouts. Inspite of this my quants perfomance is low. i have improved a lot in my verbal performance from 18 to 30 questions being correct by using PR verbal workouts.

Right now i have planned to practice another 300 quant problems from GROCKIT to match the number of verbal questions solved (800) and the n only take another free test from VERITAS and then buy MGMAT 6 CATs for USD 39 as the case may be.

For quants please suggest the way forward...MATHS has been a problem right from childhood. though they say GMAT maths is of 10th standard i dont think so the way it is !!! :)

My Friend , you need to understand that solving even 1000 problems won't take you anywhere if you do not invest time into
1 ) Analyzing the mistakes you made
2 ) Working on your fundamentals

You will get more value out of solving 100 questions and analyzing the 20-30 you get wrong than attempting 500 questions and not spending any time analyzing. I would also recommend maintaining this log https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/gmat-error-log while working on your Official Guide. It helped me, so I am making the assumption that it will help you as well. GMAT OG is your bible literally, you did not mention attempting questions from it in your post. Maybe you are treating it as a low priority item ? If yes, it would probably be wise to switch to OG right now and just master it.

In general I am a firm believer in choosing one source but mastering it in and out. This involves re-attempting questions which you got wrong in the past. Having several sources to refer could cause confusion and give a false sense of accomplishment. But it could be just my opinion !

I am probably wrong person to talk to about quant because I did not do anything other than the OG for that. An engineering background takes care of quant section .Also I did not use grockit so can't really comment about that.

But for verbal
- Instead of buying MGMAT tests, order the MGMAT sentence correction book. In my opinion it is best book available in market and those 7 CATs come free with it !

- I really enjoyed powerscore critical reasoning bible. It helped both with CR and RC questions.

I have shared tips/tricks which helped me. Could probably be useful to you as well.
