Is x > 2 ?

(1) 2x > 4
(2) x + 1 > 2

Answer: A

Target question: Is x > 2 ?

Statement 1: 2x > 4
Divide both sides of the inequality by 2 to get: x > 2
The answer to the target question is YES, x is greater than 2
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: x + 1 > 2
Subtract 1 from both sides to get: x > 1
There are several values of x that satisfy the inequality x > 1. Here are two:
Case a: x = 1.5. In this case, the answer to the target question is NO, x is NOT greater than 2
Case b: x = 3. In this case, the answer to the target question is YES, x is greater than 2
Since we cannot answer the target question with certainty, statement 2 is NOT SUFFICIENT

Answer: A
