Which of the following fractions is greater than 1/4?

A. 12/50
B. 3/11
C. 2/9
D. 4/17
E. 6/24

6/24 is EQUAL to 1/4
In other words, 6/24 is not GREATER than 1/4....ELIMINATE E

3/11 = 0.272727....
1/4 = 0.25

So, 3/11 is GREATER THAN 1/4

Hello Roland.

As you can see the question says greater than. Option E is 6/24=1/4. Now, option E is not greater than 1/4 (it is equal). So, E is not correct.

Now, we can check that B is greater than 1/4 as follows:

3/11>1/4 <=> 12>11, the last inequality is true, so the first one is also true.

In conclusion, B is the correct option.

6/24 =>

(6*1)/(6*4) =>

1/4

1/4 isn't greater than itself, so E is out.

Solution:

We see that 1/4 = 0.25.

Since 12/50 = 24/100 = 0.24, A is not the correct answer.

Since 3/11 = 0.2727…, B is the correct answer.

Alternate Solution:

We are looking for a numerator that is more than 4 times the denominator. This will indicate that the value of the fraction is greater than ¼.

Choice A: 12 x 4 = 48. Since 48 < 50, this doesn’t work.

Choice B: 3 x 4 = 12. Since 12 > 11, this is the correct answer. We see that 3/11 is greater than ¼.

Let’s finish the remaining choices to show that they won’t work.

Choice C: 2 x 4 = 8. Since 8 < 9, this doesn’t work.

Choice D: 4 x 4 = 16. Since 16 < 17m, this doesn’t work.

Choice E: 6 x 4 = 24. Since 24 = 24, this doesn’t work (the fraction is equal to ¼)

Answer: B
