by kvcpk » Sun Jun 13, 2010 10:50 pm
This is MGMAT SC Question. I couldnt find the answer.

Our firm is best suited to undertake the project because we have the financial wherewithal, vast experience undertaking similar projects, and can use our large employee base - all of which is necessary to complete the work on-time and under budget.

A. the financial wherewithal, vast experience undertaking similar projects, and can use our large employee base - all of which is necessary
B. the financial wherewithal, vast experience undertaking similar projects, and a large employee base - all necessary
C. the financial wherewithal, vast experience undertaking similar projects, and a large employee base - all of whom are necessary
D. the financial wherewithal, vast experience undertaking similar projects, and can use our large employee base necessary
E. the financial wherewithal, vast experience undertaking similar projects, and can use our large employee base since they are necessary

The answer has to be B.

"the financial wherewithal", "vast experience undertaking similar projects", and "can use our large employee base" have to be parallel. The first two are parallel but the last one is not.

Only options B and C maintain parallelism. C is incorrectly using pronoun "whom". "whom" is used to refer only for human beings. So that leaves us with B.

Hope that helps..

Thanks Hardik.. I was thinking the same way.. Just had doubt whether "all necessary" can be used directly.

Do you think it can be used directly?

It can be used. "all necessary.." is functioning as modifier.

If I am not wrong "all necessary.." is functioning as modifier and it is modifying all three characterstics of the firm "the financial wherewithal", "vast experience undertaking similar projects", and Large employee base.
Only B maintain correct parallel structure here, SO It is B for me.
Thanks and Regards,

If there was an option

"F. the financial wherewithal, vast experience undertaking similar projects, and a large employee base - all of which are necessary "

Would you choose F or B?

Our firm is best suited to undertake the project because we have the financial wherewithal, vast experience undertaking similar projects, and can use our large employee base - all of which is necessary to complete the work on-time and under budget.

A. the financial wherewithal, vast experience undertaking similar projects, and can use our large employee base - all of which is necessary - usage of "and" creates plural subject, hence usage of singular "is" is incorrect.
B. the financial wherewithal, vast experience undertaking similar projects, and a large employee base - all necessary - Correct
C. the financial wherewithal, vast experience undertaking similar projects, and a large employee base - all of whom are necessary - Usage of whom here is incorrect because we use "Who" and "Whom" to refer to people. For example the sentence My Telephone, who has a great battery life is awesome would be incorrect.
D. the financial wherewithal, vast experience undertaking similar projects, and can use our large employee base necessary - Destroys the parallelism
E. the financial wherewithal, vast experience undertaking similar projects, and can use our large employee base since they are necessary Destroys the parallelism

Takeaway: That and which can only refer to things. Who and whom can only refer to people. Who is used as the subject of a sentence or a clause. Whom is always the object of a verb or prepositional phrase.

B is choosen over F b'coz after HYPHEN is there and we need modifier or some sort of eg. which means that same first sentence is going on...

F will be correct when it reads like...

Our firm is best suited to undertake the project because we have the financial wherewithal, vast experience undertaking similar projects, and can use our large employee base , and all of these assets are necessary to complete the work on-time and under budget.
