Hi folks,

I have often read aout the idiom "not only X but also Y", where X and Y are grammatically parallel.

At the same time, I have come across correct SC answer choices where there are variants like "not only X but Y" or "not X but also Y".

I thought the original idiom was a hard and fast rule and have always been sticking to it.

Are there any exceptions?

IMO....As per OG there are only two idioms to remember:

1. not only...but also...
2. not X but [rather] Y.

In #2 rather is optional.

Probably you might be referring to source that is not OG....as far as I have seen OG follows the above two idioms strictly....

Please tell if there are any exceptions that I might have missed in OG-10 and OG-11....

Either I might have seen in one of the preps(i.e. gmatprep/veritas/mgmat/kaplan) or in one of the questions put up here in this forum...

IMO as per OG the above two idioms are followed very strictly....please correct me if I am wrong....

Since, we are playing on GMAT ground...so IMO best is to follow the rules made by them....
