Investing in real estate would be a profitable venture at this time. A survey in House magazine revealed that 85% of the magazine’s readers are planning to buy a second home over the next few years. A study of the real estate industry, however, revealed that the current supply of homes could only provide for 65% of that demand each year.
Which of the following, if true, reveals a weakness in the evidence cited above?
(A) Real estate is a highly labor-intensive business.
(B) Home builders are not evenly distributed across the country.
(C) The number of people who want second homes has been increasing each year for the past ten years.
(D) Readers of House magazine are more likely than most people to want second homes.
(E) House magazine includes articles about owning a second home as well as articles about building a second home.
ans is D.how cum.pl sumbdy explain.

D weakens the argument by saying that it is only readers of the magazine want second homes.
For ex if there are 100 readers and 100000 people living in city, only 100 people want second home and not all. Hence argument is weakened.

conclusion: real estate is profitable because demand > supply.gmat20092009 wrote:Investing in real estate would be a profitable venture at this time. D says that the demand being calculated here is not a fair/representative sample hence you can't rely on that percentage. C is a distractor, it is irrelevant to the conclusion.
why D?
same logic as madhur_ahuja
why not C?
C provides evidence that more and more people wanted 2nd hand homes in the past 10 years. However, the argument discusses everything in the present and future: "85% of the magazine’s readers are planning to buy a second home over the next few years", "current supply of homes could only provide for 65% of that demand each year". Therefore, past demand statistics is irrelevant.

1) To buy house
2) To sell house
3) To decorate their houses
So the 85% is quite misleading when compared with real estate industry's estimations.
