geological constraint

due to geological constraint, the gold discovered in south Africa in 1886 could not be easily mined by the sort of independent fortune-seeking adventurers whom had prospered without the aid of large machinery in previous gold rushes in other lands.
1) whom had prospered
2) whom prospered
3) whom achieved prosperity
4) who will have prospered
5) who had prospered

OA after discussion.. please give ur reasoning

IMO A.

sentence is in passive voice so the adventurers are in objective form and whom should be used.
What is the OA ?

Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

I think E is the right answer.

fortune-seeking adventurers -- are the object of the sentence. [spoiler]'Who'[/spoiler] is a better choice.

IMO E

As Ron says "Tense related SCs are based 100% on meaning" , here is my attempt.

|-----------Past Perfect----------------|---------------------Past------------------|------Present-----

(adventurers had prospered ---------|---(gold discovered in ------|
in previous gold rushes)---------------|---1886 could not mined)--|

E) who had prospered --only answer that satisfies the meaning + who is the relative pronoun for adventurers

If fortune seeking adventurers are object then whom is the right usage. Correct me if i am wrong. Even i was confused between A/E only but chose A as the adventurers are objects.

"Who" should be the correct relative pronoun.
"Whom" would be correct if the sentence had been something like "fortune seeking adventurers whom we had seen".
