This might be the most dump question that somebody is going to ever ask but I need to know.
Can anybody tell me how to identify if a verb is acting as a noun (i.e GERUND OR ACTION NOUN ) or verb in any sentence..
I don't know how to sort them out and as a result I end up paralle-ings thing that I should not.

Please HELP!!!

Hi Manihar,

Gerund is actually a noun...But, it can also be a helping verb.

For Example: Running is my favorite exercise
You can replace "Running" with Squats, Push-Ups or whatever. Here, you can see that running acts as a noun.

On the other hand, if we say "Hari was running behind Terry" - here running helps the verb "was'.

Hi Manihar,

I don't think so there is comprehensive rule of thumb to identify if an verb is acting as Noun or verb.
One has to always look for context and meaning to identify.

But most of the times in following structure verbs act as verb

Noun + helping verb + verb

In the sentence isn't "was" working as a helping verb for running..

Okay Can anybody tell me the Subject and the verbs in this sentence.
This one is from Manhattan SC Guide page 218
The young bride, as well as her husband, were amazed by the generosity of the wedding guests.

I apologize please replace were by was but why does Manhattan marks was as the verb and not amazed.
