Because a surfeit of undergraduate students has sent class sizes soaring, the university has announced that it will hire more faculty members for the next year.

(A) Because a surfeit of undergraduate students has sent class sizes soaring,
(B) Because of soaring class sizes, which is due to a surfeit of undergraduate students,
(C) Because of class sizes have been soaring, which resulted from a surfeit of undergraduate students,
(D) Due to soaring class sizes from a surfeit of undergraduate students,
(E) Due to a surfeit of undergraduate students, with the result that class sizes have been sent soaring

IMO A.
B-Because of and Due to are redundant terms.
C-Because of and resulted from is again redundant.
D-Due to X from Y.I feel this is not the right wording and does not convey right meaning
E-I just feel its too wordy and awkward.

Answer A seems likely since it is not redundant.

A looks best.

B - Because of is an adverbial prepositional phrase and generally answers the question why? It cannot modify a noun phrase soaring class sizes.

C- Because of is incorrect.
Tense agreement error in two parts of the sentence. have been soaring and resulted from.

D - Due to (X from Y) is incorrect.

E - have been sent soaring - Passive construction is incorrect here. Who has send them soaring?

Due to means "caused by." It should be used only if it can be substituted with "caused by."

It does not mean the same as "because of."

Incorrect: The show was postponed due to rain.

Correct: The show was postponed because of rain.

Correct: The show's postponement was due to rain.

The wordy expression due to the fact that should be replaced by because or since.

The hiring of new faculty members was due to surfeit of undergraduate students - correct

thanks for your explanation.
The examples what you have given, I am aware with those.
But I am confused when 'due to' comes in the starting of the sentence. (as here)

Most of the time, I have seen that if 'due to' is coming at the start of he sentence (as here) then it is a wrong choice,

Is there any general rule for it.

I don't think there is an absolute rule for due to, Sentence correction IS as much about correct grammar as it is about elimination of incorrect options.

But usually, if there is a split between due to and because of .. because of option is preferred on GMAT.

B is incorrect becase Soaring Class sizes is plural,therefore which should be followed by are.
