The sum of the mean, the median, and the range of the set {1, 2, 6} equals which one of the following values?

A. 2
B. 4
C. 6
D. 8
E. 10

The OA is the option E.

Why is E the correct option? I don't understand why is 10. Can any expert help me? Thanks in advanced.

Mean = (1+2+6)/3 = 3.
Median = middle value = 2.
Range = biggest - smallest = 6-1 = 5.
Sum = mean + median + range = 3+2+5 = 10.

The correct answer is E.

Given: {1, 2, 6}

Mean = (1 + 2 + 6)/3 = 9/3 = 3
Median = 2
Range = 6 - 1 = 5

SUM = 3 + 2 + 5 = 10

Answer: E

Hi Vincen,
Let's take a look at your question.

Let's first find the mean of the set {1, 2, 6}.
$$Mean\ =\ \frac{Sum}{\text{Number of quantities}}$$
$$Mean\ =\ \frac{1+2+6}{3}=\frac{9}{3}=3$$

Median is the middle value of the data when it is arranged in ascending or descending order.
Data is in ascending order, therefore,
$$Median\ =\ 2$$

Range is the difference between the largest and smallest value.
$$Range\ =\ 6\ -\ 1\ =\ 5$$
$$Sum\ =\ 3+2+5=10$$

Therefore, Option E is correct.
