I don't have the exact distribution but its not like the SAT or GRE where each section is worth half of the total number of points. From what I can tell, the scaled score is the most important determinant for your score. For instance if you kill the math and get a 60 scaled score, even if you only get like a 36 on verbal your score will be above 700. If each section were only out of 400 points, this wouldn't be possible.

Ultimately you're competing against other people who have taken the test... that's how the percentiles are compiled. I want to say over the last 3 years, but maybe it's over the last 5 years, which would make sense since that's how long the scores are good for but don't quote me.

It's easier to get a high score by doing well on the Verbal section than on the Quant section. For instance...

John scores a 45Q and 35V - higher quant
Jane scores a 45V and 35Q - higher verbal

Jane's score may be 700 while Johns score is a 650. *the numbers are arbitrary.. just showing the relationship. The caveat with this model is that B-schools like to see 80% on both Quant and Verbal. So an even split is ideal.

hahah sorry... in other words... don't try to decipher the algorithm. use your time studying for the exam.. :-)

but in essence.. your raw quant and verbal scores do not translate into a multiple of 10 (350, 500, 600, 800)

well there's not much you can do about it DURING the test.. obviously we want to know how we're doing... and a benchmark but don't get caught up on the score in the beginning

I did the gmatprep test (from the www.mba.com). I didn't study for the verbal part at all, so I took only quantitative section, and in verbal I clicked randomly on some of the answer choices. Can anyone tell me may I conclude domething from this (about my quantitative section), please ?
