Sqrt of 10

Of the following, which is most nearly equal to sqrt10?
(A) 3.1
(B) 3.2
(C) 3.3
(D) 3.4
(E) 3.5

How does one solve this without using a calculator or remembering the value by heart:-)?

One approach would be to square each answer choice and see which one is closest to 10.
(A) 3.1² = 9.61
(B) 3.2² = 10.24
(C) 3.3² =
(D) 3.4² =
(E) 3.5² =

We can stop at 3.2², since it's clear that the other three values (3.3, 3.4 and 3.5), when squared, will be greater than 10.24

So, it looks like 3.2 is closest in value to √10

Answer: B
