@ hemant rajput while u marked d as correct ,which i also think is right ,but u have not answered the doubt of the original poester

To original poster
"has gifted" is wrong coz u talking of point event in history .u r not tlking of something which is taking place over a course of time or of something whose effect can still be felt and hence we sud not use "has gifted"

correct answer is D

D is the right choice why?
A. In October, the chairman of Tata Sons, Ratan Tata, gifted $50 million for his alma mater, the Harvard Business School to give back to the school a little bit of what it (gifted for-->wrong)
B. In October, the chairman of Tata Sons, Ratan Tata, has gifted $50 million to his alma mater, the Harvard Business School, which is an attempt to give back to the school a little bit of what it (has gifted--> wrong) simple past tense is right. the last part of the sentence uses Had given...this shows that this action happened before gifting $50 million. thus simple past tense should be used) moreover, the use of which is wrong here
C. In October, the chairman of Tata Sons, Ratan Tata, gifted $50 million to his alma mater, the Harvard Business School, in an attempt to give back to the school a little bit of what they (they---> pronoun error)
D. In October, the chairman of Tata Sons, Ratan Tata, gifted $50 million to his alma mater, the Harvard Business School, in an attempt to give back to the school a little bit of what it (right choice)
E. In October, the chairman of Tata Sons, Ratan Tata, decided to gift $50 million to his alma mater, the Harvard Business School, it being an attempt to give back to the school a little bit of what it (it being an attempt---> awkward)

@aditya You don't need to find every single error in given options. If you spot any error(as per GMAT criteria) just eliminate the choice.
The ulterior motive to choose the correct answer not to find mistake. Thanks for clarifying the doubt of original poster.

use of past perfect tense and past tence!
when two actions happened in the past, then the prior action need past perfect and the later one with simple past tense.

To hemant
i agree with u that u r real intention is get to the answer but plz understand that when people ask specific doubts in these forums then all they want is an answer to that specific doubt.i mean who knows he might have eliminated that choice for the same reason that u mentioned and then got stuck with that "doubt" ,which he cited .

To Aditya,

This was exactly what happened!!! I eliminated B on the basis of "which" for an improper reference and then just had a doubt of why "has gifted" is incorrect.

Thank you aditya ...Your reply is much more helpful!!!
