CR Conclusion - Doubt!!!

by ronnie1985 » Tue Jan 17, 2012 10:46 am
Military Alumni

Of all the high schools in US, Judd Academy is the only one with the largest number of alumni serving in the Air Force. KW High School, however is the school is the one with most graduates serving in the military as a whole, including the army, navy, air force, marines, and coast guard.
Which of the following, if true, is most supported by the statements above?
(A) KW is the most patriotic town in the nation.
(B) Judd Academy has fewer graduates serving in the Navy than does KW High School.
(C) Judd Academy has higher percentage of alumni serving in the air force than does KW High School
(D) Some graduates of KW High School are serving in military but not in air force.
(E) KW High School is the school with the second highest number of alumni serving in Air force.

The official answer given in Manhattan Strategy Guide for CR is (D). I am unable to digest the answer as it is clearly written in the premise that KW high school alumni work in Military including air force. Please explain...

As you can see that this argument doesn't have any conclusion. This is an Inference Question so therefore You cannot assume anything that has not been stated. In inference Questions, generally, the correct answer would be one of the following.

a. Restatement of any of the premises.
b. Something that can be implied( not stated )from the premises.

My personal Opinion: Always USE POE in inference based Questions.

A. KW is the most patriotic town in the nation. Not stated neither can be implied.

B. Judd Academy has fewer graduates serving in the Navy than does KW High School. Given is the number of JUDD Acadmians in the Airforce. Nothing has been said about JUDD acadimians in Navy. Rule out.

C. Judd Academy has higher percentage of alumni serving in the air force than does KW High School. This is a shell game answer. Here it talks about percentages where as argument only has numbers.

E. KW High School is the school with the second highest number of alumni serving in Air force. This could be true but neither stated nor can be implied.

D. Some graduates of KW High School are serving in military but not in air force. Correct. IF you still want explanations for this. Please let me know.

IF anyone feels that i am wrong above in my explanations. Please make your point here. I am also a learner.

The argument says that graduates from KW high school serve in all the branches of the air force: navy, army, or marines. Therefore, we can infer
that some of them do not serve in the air force. Because those that serve in the navy, army, or marines do not serve in the air force (assuming you can't serve in more than one at the same time).

@ronnie 1985: The sentence, "KW high school alumni work in Military including air force," is consonant with this idea - because it clearly states that KW alumni work in other branches of the military besides the air force. Therefore, some graduates of KW serve in the military but not in the air force. (D)

I hope that was helpful :)

@Shekhar: Explanation required. The premise states that the KW high school alumni serve in military, including AIR FORCE.

Ronnie,
Take it this way.

Let's say ,
the number of alumni from Judd Academy = 50
Alumni working in Air force = 48

the number of alumni from KW High School = 100
Alumni working in Militry = 70
Alumni working in army, navy, air force, marines, and coast guard = 20

C. Judd Academy has higher percentage of alumni serving in the air force than does KW High School.
Option C can not be true always.

D. Some graduates of KW High School are serving in military but not in air force.
True. Because the gratuates from KW school working in Militry are not working in other areas.

Hope it helps.

@ronnie: If alumni of KW are in the military, including the air force, that means that some of them are not in the air force.

Let's break it down this way:

KW alumni in military:

Navy - 3
Army - 5
Air Force 4

Here we have KW alumni who serve in the military, including the air force.

"military...including the air force" implies that some of KW do not serve in the air force.

Now look at the following numbers:

Navy - 0
Army - 0
Air Force - 4

Now we cannot say some KW alumni serve in the military, including the air force. They ONLY serve in the air force. Therefore
there have to be some KW alumni who serve in other branches of the military besides those who serve in the air force.

I hope that was clearer :).

For KW

Military = Army+Marines+Airforce+ CoastGuard

Definitely , Some Military are not Airforces

(D)CORRECT

(C) INCORRECT--Number and Percentage should not mix

Answer = D. this is restatement of the last sentence of the argument.

Answer C is a tricky pitfall since we do not know the information of total number of alumini of both the academy schools.
