Similar to rising interest rates

by M09 » Tue Dec 01, 2009 10:31 am
Folks for some of you this must a old Q, but please help me with this one.

Similar to rising interest rates, consumer and producer prices have been rising.

(A) Similar to rising interest rates, consumer and producer prices have been rising.
(B) Consumer and producer prices have been rising, as have interest rates.
(C) As interest rates are rising, so have consumer and producer prices.
(D) Consumer and producer prices have been rising, like interest rates do.
(E) Consumer and producer prices, as interest rates, have been rising.

I could narrow it down to option B or C. Can anyone please tell me what's wrong with option C.
did I miss something ?

Both B and C seem incorrect to me because they are not structurally parallel.

BTW C also does not sound correct as highlighted below
As interest rates are rising, so have consumer and producer prices [are rising].

I would go with E. What is wrong with E? I know we are comparing 'Consumer and producer prices' with 'interest rates' and should be comparing the fact that they are both rising but is this way of comparison incorrect ?
Also can't 'As' take nouns or noun phrases?. This is a doubt I still have.

What is the OA and what is the source of the question.

Batbond007,

E is not correct. The source is 1000 SC.

heshamelaziry, how did you narrow it down to B and E ?? whats the reason for elimination of C

check grammar before check meaning logic

LIKE can not be used before a clause. D is out

AS can not be used before a noun (used before a noun, as has different meaning). E is out

HAVE in C is wrong because there is no HAVE in the first clause.

"similar to rising rates" is wrong. we can consider RISING an adjective modifying RATES or a verb having rate as object. Moreover, RISING appears 2 time and so is redundant. A is out
