. Anyways here is my round one debrief:
https://www.beatthegmat.com/hit-hard-by- ... 39934.html

I took the gmat few hours ago, happy to say that I made a huge improvement 100 points from my past attempt. Although it took me almost a year, I did not prepare for the entire 9 monts :( . I took 7 days off from work and grilled my self. I did revise stuff on and off but the past 7 days were really crucial. I studied for 11 hours a day and stayed extremely focussed.

Things that I did this time:
1) For the past 30 days, was very picky on what I ate. Stuffed myself with healthy food, supplemented with vitamins and picked up the habit of driking green tea (lipton green tea).

2) Took practice exams at exactly the same time as my actual exam ( 9:00 AM every day). Practiced taking the full exam (including AWA) every time I took the exam.

3) Revised verbal over, over, over and over.

4) On quant, unlearnt one thing that bumped my score to 50 consistently! (I used this unlearning to some extent last attempt but followed it diligently this time). People with maths background (engineers, IT etc folks) sometimes dont fare well (including me on my first attempt got only 49 where I felt I can get easy 50) because we jump right in to solving the problem. But to get >= 49 you should pause for atleast 30 seconds after reading the question, understand what is being asked and simplify the question. Almost 70% of the GMAT questions dont need calculation but just simplifications. Since the wordings and questions get tricky as you are doing well, the more you need to focus on not solving but understanding what the question is asking. This helped me immensely in managing my time and getting the good strike rate today.

5) For verbal I focussed only on OG (10,11,12) mistakes from round1. I saved my previous OG attempt questions where I was incorrect. So I just focussed on only those and the Manhattan GMAT CAT tests. Thats all I did.

6) For quant just did OGs and Manhattan GMAT cats. I would advice that manhattan gmat for quant is a over kill. The questions need calculations so do them for practise to know the question types but in real gmat the focus is not on the calculations but on the understanding and simplification of the question.

In the exam today (started on time at 9:00 AM):
1) AWA was fairly easy. Analysis of argument was a common one. Finished in 20 mins, revised for 4 mins and moved on. Analysis of issue was the same one that I wrote yesterday. So was happy that I did not have to think for points. Again finished in 26mins, revised for 4 mins.

2) Took the break, ate half banana, gulped some green tea (cold one ofcourse that I got from home)

3) Quant started with a fairly ticky question. Again the motto was not to solve the problem but to analyze the question, simplify the question (without using pen and paper) and then if needed use the paper. Today I felt that almost 70 to 80% of the questions did not need calculation but simplifications and intelligent answer selection. The questions got trickier and tricker. I had to select "Each is sufficient, option D" for a whole bunch of questions in DS. In the entire exam I had to select "E - either is not sufficient" only twice. Finished quant 2 minutes early. Panicked a bit on the sheer number of "D" I had to select on the DS. Also the number of DS were more than the PS i felt.
Got 1 probability question. Around 3 questions repeated from GPREP.

4) Took the break again, ate the remaining half of the banana, ate few yogurt covered raisins (candy that I picked from safeway), drank some more green tea. BTW, green tea soothes the nerves and is good for the body in general. I am big Avatar fan (not the movie but the cartoon, Avatar-the last air bender) so learnt about the green tea from that cartoon :) Experimented with it while taking the mock ups and found that it really works !

5) Verbal began. Man I thought I was going to own this section this time ! I took GPREP2 and got 47 in verbal with only one mistake in RC (btw I dont remember anything from my last attempt, so solved every question in GPREP). In the exam today, the SC's were very very tricky and very close !
The RCs were piece of cake, the answers to most of them very obvious. I got 3 short passages and 1 long one.
CRs were usual level as GPREP.
I never scored below 42 in my last 7 day prep (took mgmcat test, gprep) so was stumped to see a 38. Being a non-native speaker and the sheer amount of energy and focus I put in this section I am bit disappointed with the result. A 40 was what I was expecting in the worst case.

Also, one thing to note is that my right hand was shivering for the last 30 mins of the exam. I was so pumped to beat the verbal this time that I wanted to rip it out. BUT, I give the upper hand to GMAT that it won on the verbal section. The takeaway from verbal was that the SC questions were very very tricky and very close.

6) Finished verbal with 30 secs to spare. Was expecting 760 (like lasttime :(, i always expected 760 :( ) but saw 720 (Q50, V38). Felt happy that I crossed the 700 hurdle.

Have mixed emotions a 740 would have made me excited but content with 720. I am planning to apply in Europe (LBS, IMD, INSEAD) and India (ISB and IIMa) so atleast my score qualifies for a look at my application.

The best advice I can give is to treat the exam as a physical sport. Prepare yourself both mentally and physically. The concepts and theory can only take you till the 650+ mark but to cross 700+ it needs discipline, smarts (wits and tricks) and good health. Most importantly the "CAN-DO" attitude !

I am not giving up on the 760 which I think I CAN-DO if I take to the next level, but I will try to console myself to be rational and focus on getting the foot in to top tier colleges.

SO THATS MY STORY FOLKS ! I am hopeful that I will make it in to one of my preferred colleges. Will definitely chime in and keep my account active this time !!!

In answer to your PM, yes you should be competitive with your profile. Academically you are rock solid with your GMAT and graduate degree. Working for a fortune 500 company is a real plus. Have you considered applying to schools in the US? INternational applications are down this year, so not a bad time to try to come over. Still, you should be very competitive at the European schools you are targeting as long as you weave a compelling story and cast a vision for what you will do post-MBA.

Hi,

First of all many congrats for your fundoo GMAT score :). I have few queries which i would like to clarify from you.

For verbal I am planning to stick to OG 10,11,12 GMAT Prep and Manhattan CATS. Anything else apart from this?

You mentioned of applying in iima. As far as indian colleges are concerned I am aware that Great Lakes, ISB and SPJAIN Mumbai consider GMAT scores. IIM'S do take GMAT score but only for 1 year program. Please correct me if I am wrong also can you please let me know of any other colleges in India where GMAT scores are applicable?

Thanks

hey gmatmarch2010,
The really important lesson to take away from OGs and Manhattan GMATs is that you need to concentrate on the really odd types of questions. There are around 80% of the questions that you can do right first time and second time. what I did and I suggest doing is that do the full OGs atleast twice; first round the entire questions, second round only on the incorrect ones. Make a note of the incorrect ones and there are few questions no matter how many times you do you or when I did, I got them incorrect (unless you remember the answer or already have a very good verbal basics from schooling that I lacked) becoz the concepts that are tested are way too broad and vague. BTW, being honest while answering the question i.e. the way to move to another option is to rule out why you are not choosing that as answer..

Yes sticking to OGs and Manhattan gmat is enough for verbal. Remember that you should try to focus on the questions that went wrong clarifying the logic incase of CR or the grammar rule incase of SC and not be happy that the strike rate is some %.. Manhattan CAT test analysis is very very useful.. Take tests and after that they give analysis spend atleast 2 days on the analysis and taking additional notes since I found additional finer points in their analysis.

Another really important thing i want to share is that I got around 4 to 5 questions repeated from GPREP. The one I downloaded from mba, com. I know most will not believe but I got the questions repeated on both my attempts on attempt 1 and attempt2. This was true for both quant and verbal. The reason was because I repeated the Gprep test so many times that i dont even remember how many times I did. Knowingly I did atleast around 25 times with repeat, reinstall again and again. The questions 70% of the times were same but the other 30% questions that I got were really weird and I could not answer with my prep notes and knowledge so I had to build a new cheat sheet based on these questions.

Finally, yeah i am planning to pursue only 1 year mba..

That was really helpful and i am going to implement all your advise. Thanks again buddy.

By the time I will join a college I will have close to 5 yrs of exp in IT field working as a project engineer. Can you please let me know if my profile will fit for IIMA if my score is in the range of 720-750 because i have no experience working as a lead/manager. Can you please throw more light on this?

Thanks

Thanks for the insight.
I am planning to take GMAT "again" some time in April (last time I scored 630 (M48 V28)).
I have been concentrating mostly on verbal, I took 2 tests and scored 660 (M46 V34) and 680(M45 V37) in MGMAT prep test.
I recently started Math preparation, so not worried about it right now.

Can you tell me what exactly you did to improve your Verbal Score, also when exactly did you start getting 42+ in verbal?

Thanks,
Shridhar

The first time i took gmat I did not take manhattan gmat tests. This time I took and I got 37 or around 37 for 5 tests and in the sixth test I got 44. This was 2 weeks before the actual test. After this I analyzed my mistakes carefully, I spent time completely on the type of questions and the answers, that is, read the question and paused few secs to understand what concepts and type of question it is (this was advice from stacey after my first attempt). Then went to eliminate one answer after the other. This is fairly painful but as I said i only did just 2 weeks before the exam. This was deliberate because the thing with GMAT is, the more you practice and the efficient you become. But if it is not close to your final date then the retention rate in your memory is very low and you will forget soon. So after doing this for 3 to 4 days then I gave GMATPrep 2 and score 47 in verbal with just 1 mistake. I was very confident that I could beat this time. I diligently followed the elimination process and reading RC slowly to understand the passage organization and then going to answers. In the last week I consistently got above 42; before that also i used to get, but that was due to repeats or I knew the question etc and I did not know why I chose on over the other.

I could have done even better in the final but I was literally shivering for the final 30 mins, the SCs were ok not extremely difficult but they were very very close and each question was testing more than 2 concepts for the hard ones. Got around 6 to 7 of these kind. As I said earlier RC was a piece of cake and two CRs were tough I guessed because I did not want to burn more time and finish all the questions.

Again, my advice is in the final weeks (1 to 2 weeks max before) of the exam do practice and analyze a lot. Pickup the skill of not jumping to answer the question immediately and you will easily hit 700. If you just revise before the exam with out practice, you will be very become either extremely confident or complacent and there is a chance that you will misjudge the final exam and get burnt as it happened to me in my first attempt. Do a complete exam one day before the final so that you will be in the same mode, dont worry too much on that practice score.

Wanted to give an update that I ditched the idea of applying in Europe for 2 year schools and for that matter all 2 year programs. I have around 8 years of exp with MS so I applied to ISB and made it in and all set to join the Class of 2012 starting in April. Since I am a local, will be easy for my entrepreneurial venture :)

BTW from the time I took the test till date I have been crazy busy with applications (applied to ISB but prepared the essays for Cornell Accelerated MBA which I did not apply as I got the ISB interview call before I applied to Cornell), interview travel for ISB, then planning for relocation to India and etc..

I have updated my profile with an email address that I am going to check and respond to all regularly. Keep in touch if you need any assistance for GMAT, applications advice.. Also, no gotchas, its all free advice and help from my side as I got a huge support from the BTG community that I want to return back the favor :)

If you have read my posts and reached out for help, that in itself is a huge step.

Remember beating GMAT is not a big deal, it is all about how you prepare yourself mentally not only for exam but also for your future and tune your thinking..

Your post is going to inspire many. Congrats.

Question:
3) Revised verbal over, over, over and over.
What do you mean by this ? I know you have written already about verbal but wanted to know this specifically.
