Im not sure what the right idiom for shape public opinion on/in ....but still chose B becasue others had definited issues.

A is wrong becasue like can not be used to compare clause which in this case it is.

Eliminate A, C, and E since "like" is used instead of "such as." Between B and D, D is excessively wordy (the shaping of, and those toward... these are worse than the counterparts presented in B).
Have you wondered how you could have found such a treasure? -T

I think helped should not be underlined in the question.

Check option A..it does not contain helped.

I always miss out such .... as ... B and D remains as per POE. B suits to be correct..
"Native of" is used for a individual while "Native to" is used for a large group

B is correct because it is more logic to say


areas such as attitudes and merits

but I am not sure

B &D for sure but how can we use ''helped shape'' . Two are the verbs we need helped to shape or helped shaping or helped the shape of public opinion.

As per my understanding, please note that there is no difference between the usage of

a) books such as X and Y.
b) such books as X and Y.

Both are correct in GMAT and both convey the same exact thing in GMAT.

So the B although may sound awkward....is correct usage in GMAT.

IMO here B is best because...D has no logical referent for those........if it refers to attitudes...then there is no need for those toward to be repeated.......because in "such as"...list we do not require to repeat the same.

Basically original sentence said there were two areas where she change
a) children and families
b)relative merits of competition and cooperation

But D IMO changes this sense....

From what I've come to understand :

Such X as A and B -- here A & B are types of X

X Such as A & B -- here A & B are examples of X

But i haven't really come across a question which asks one to choose between these options

the gmat is specifically testing you on certain buckets, such as idioms, subject verb agreement, modifiers, etc. Part of your job is recognizing the bucket being tested. I say this because its easy to get hung up on what might sound better but what may sound good is irrelevant. Those are the traps they have for you. So in addressing this SC question...they are testing your knowledge of such as vs. like. "Like" is comparison of two things while "such as" introduce lists. Clearly author is introducing lists so "such as" is appropriate phrase. Eliminate A, C, and E. The next thing gmat is testing is idiom "help." They are seeing if you recognize that its ok to say "helped shape" without inserting infinitive "to" between those words. Since "helped shape" is grammatically correct, B is the answer.
Whether its "in fundamentally important areas" vs. something else is irrelevant.
