Usage of THERE

Hi,

Can someone kindly explain me the usage of there -

Tom's family (is, are) considering whether there (are,is) any affordable places to go on vacation in Europe.

Hi veenu08,

This SC includes 2 verb issues that you have to solve:

1) Tom's family..... "family" is a singular noun, so the correct verb would be "is"

Tom's family is.....

2) ...there ____ any affordable places to go...

Here we have a "there" construct. In these situations, the verb has to agree with the noun that comes AFTER it. So, since the noun is "affordable places", the verb would be "are"

...there are any affordable places to go...
