1.Even as they never forgave the Crusaders who overran their homeland, the Syrians have never absolved the French for taking territory from them.

(A) Even as they never forgave
(B) While they never forgave
(C) Just like they never forgave
(D) Similarly to not forgiving
(E) In spite of their never forgiving

i dont understand why is the answer not C?

would C have been correct if it would have been "as construction" in place of "like construction"??

Is this question correct in it's entirety? The underlined portion says, The Syrians never forgave the french. The non-underlined portion says, they never absolved them. If the Syrians never forgave them in the first place, we can assume that they didn't absolve them either

Just like introduces a comparison. We are not trying to compare anything here

'like' cannot be used to compare clauses. Use 'as' to compare clauses.
