I would say D here. A, C, and E all have pronouns with unclear antecedents. The "so" in A and B is also incorrect; the correct word here is "that," showing that what follows that word describes what comes before it. What's the OA?

IMO attempts at is unidiomatic , so only A and D left
in A it is amnbiguous
so D

Idiom - attempts to ..

Leaves A and D , however A has "it" so making "D" as correct answer

Going through modifier again and looking at every question more thoroughly and came across this question.

What exactly is the role of "that..." and what is it modifying?

Experts, please enlighten us =).
