The OA is E

My question is
Would B be a better choice if I change
"many hundreds" to "hundreds".
Them in E is not looking good to me.

E makes perfect sense out of all choices.
If you read B properly it is not conveying the right meaning even if you change "many hundreds" to "hundreds".

even after modification
"Chiseled from solid rock centuries ago" will end p modifying "Mountain"
instead of "monasteries".
So "E" correct choice here

How about the tenses used in option E ?

What would you say if I say ARE in option E, needs to be WERE ?

I didn't mean that.......All i wanted to say that whn the original sentence is describing present, we should maintain the consistency of the tense in order to avoid changing the meaning.

BTW "All" includes "you" also :-) Just kidding

A single tense (Not tenses, i never said tenses) - present tense: the orig. sentence is describing present.

i could not understand any other meaning apart from the one that Whether the answer would be correct if i use were

logitech ... "are" is correct in option E because the monasteries still exist.

A and B: "chiseled from solid rock" in correctly modifies "the mountainous region" instead of "monasteries".
C: "are dotting" suggests the process of "dotting" is continuing and more and more monasteries are adding to the existing number.
D: "are chiseled from ...centuries ago" is incorrect. "were chiseled" must be used instead of "are chiseled" for past tense.
E: Best choice. "many of them chiseled..." correctly modifies "monasteries. Hence, E is the answer.
