Parallelism

by magizhan » Sat May 08, 2010 7:20 pm
Many critics reproved the curator's bold decision to organize the exhibit in chronological order rather than art movement.
A. to organize the exhibit in chronological order rather than art movement
B. to organize the exhibit in chronological order rather than by art movement
C. to organize the exhibit according to chronological order rather than according to art movement
D. that organized the exhibit in chronological order rather than art movement
E. that organized the exhibit by chronological order rather than by art movement.

Narrowed down to B, C and E which are parallel. Eliminated E. Found C wordy though parallel but then I wasn't sure whether B is parallel as different prepositions were used unlike in E. So chose C. OA is B. Please explain in a such a way that I don't get distracted for such questions again.

use of by two times not looks better hence E is not correct.

In D and E, that organized gives the impression that not the curator but his decision organized the exhibit.

A. to organize the exhibit in chronological order rather than art movement . compares chronological order with art movemement.

C. to organize the exhibit according to chronological order rather than according to art movement.
according in the bold part is redundant.

exhibit in chronological order as in B conveys the same meaning.

It is 2-3 split:

First split:

NOUN + THAT --That refers to the NOUN and take the verb that matches with the NOUN.

"Decision that organized....." --means the decision organized the exhibit. Decision is impersonal, so it cannot organize. This kills D and E.

Second Split:

C is just redundant. It has used the "according to" twice needlessly.

A. is not parallel.

in chronological ............rather than ----in art movement. --could be correct. The last part lacks a preposition.

Answer is B.
